Verdi’s La Traviata is an Italian opera centered on Violetta, a courtesan dying of consumption who sacrifices her love for Alfredo when his father asks her to leave him, only to reunite with him near the end of her life. This 1994 Royal Opera House production directed by Richard Eyre features soprano Angela Gheorghiu in the title role, with tenor Frank Lopardo as Alfredo and baritone Leo Nucci in the cast. Conductor Georg Solti leads the orchestra and chorus through Verdi’s score with thoughtful pacing and careful attention to detail.

The DVD release from Universal Music & Video contains two discs and runs two hours and fifteen minutes. Gheorghiu’s performance stands out for her expressive singing and nuanced acting, bringing depth to Verdi’s delicate character. Lopardo delivers a sensitive portrayal of Alfredo, while Solti’s conducting provides an elegant framework for the entire work. You’ll own this hand-inspected copy of a significant operatic recording on physical media.
