Haydn’s Die Schöpfung (The Creation) stands as a monumental work depicting the formation of the world through texts drawn from Genesis, the Book of Psalms, and Milton’s Paradise Lost. This 1986 performance, conducted by Leonard Bernstein at the Benedictine Abbey of Ottobeuren in Bavaria, captures the oratorio in its full grandeur within the exquisite Baroque setting of the abbey. Featuring soloists Judith Blegen, Lucia Popp, Thomas Moser, Kurt Ollmann, and Kurt Moll, the performance is accompanied by Bernstein’s spoken introduction to this classical masterpiece, offering insight into one of Haydn’s most celebrated compositions.

This single-disc DVD presentation runs two hours and twelve minutes and was directed by Humphrey Burton. The performance showcases the work’s ability to convey both spiritual depth and the physical immensity of nature’s creation. Owning this recording on physical media lets you experience Bernstein’s legendary interpretation without the limitations of streaming.
