Edward Zwick directed this 2003 action-drama set in 1870s Japan, starring Tom Cruise as an American military officer hired by the Emperor to train Japan’s new army in modern combat techniques. As the government moves to eliminate the samurai warrior class in favor of Western-style modernization, Algren develops deep respect for samurai culture and their code of honor. Caught between two worlds and two eras, he ultimately joins the samurai in their fight to preserve their traditional way of life. Ken Watanabe, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Koyuki round out the cast in this exploration of duty, honor, and cultural conflict.

Warner Bros. released this two-disc special edition DVD with a runtime of two hours and thirty-four minutes and an R rating. A used copy gives you this epic drama at a fraction of retail cost.
