Clint Eastwood directed this 2006 war drama that examines the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II from the Japanese perspective. Featuring Japanese dialogue with subtitles and a contemplative visual style, the film follows soldiers and officers defending the island as they face overwhelming odds and inevitable defeat. The cast includes Ken Watanabe as Commander Tadamichi Kuribayashi, Kazunari Ninomiya as young recruit Saigo, and Hiroshi Watanabe, Ryo Kase, and Shido Nakamura in supporting roles. Iris Yamashita and Paul Haggis wrote the screenplay, which humanizes the soldiers caught in this brutal conflict while exploring their internal struggles and sacrifices.
