Edward Zwick directed this 2003 American war drama set in 1870s Japan, starring Tom Cruise as Captain Nathan Algren, a U.S. Army officer hired by the Emperor to train Japan’s military in modern warfare. As the government works to eliminate the ancient samurai warriors in favor of Westernized policies, Algren develops unexpected respect for the samurai code and their way of life, finding himself caught between two worlds and two eras, guided only by his own sense of honor.
