Edward Zwick directed this 2003 war drama following an American military officer hired by Japan’s Emperor to modernize the nation’s army during the 1870s. As the government moves to eliminate the samurai warrior class in favor of Western-style governance, the officer becomes increasingly drawn to the samurai code of honor, finding himself caught between his duty to his employers and his growing respect for his adversaries. The ensemble cast includes Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe, Koyuki, Hiroyuki Sanada, Billy Connolly, and Chad Lindberg, with a screenplay by Edward Zwick, John Logan, and Marshall Herskovitz.
