Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor is a 19th-century Italian romantic opera that had traditionally been performed by light-voiced sopranos until Maria Callas brought new depth to the title role in the early 1950s through her combination of technical mastery and powerful interpretation. This recording captures a September 1955 performance in Berlin where Callas and the La Scala company performed under conductor Herbert von Karajan, alongside tenor Giuseppe di Stefano, baritone Rolando Panerai, and bass Nicola Zaccaria, creating what became known as a defining moment in operatic history.

Released in 2017 by Warner Classics, this two-disc CD set presents the complete opera across its multiple acts and scenes, including the Preludio and all major arias and ensembles. A live recording from one of the most celebrated performances of the work, this used copy lets you own a piece of operatic history at a fraction of the original retail price.
