Johannes Brahms composed his Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77 in 1878 following close collaboration with virtuoso violinist Joseph Joachim, resulting in a work that reflects their deep artistic partnership. The String Sextet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 36, written decades earlier, emerged from the composer’s personal connection to a significant relationship in his life. Both pieces represent major achievements in Brahms’ chamber and concerto repertoire, showcasing his mastery of orchestration and melodic invention.

This 2011 recording on the Harmonia Mundi label features violinist Christoph Richter performing the concerto under conductor Daniel Harding’s direction, with the string sextet performed by an ensemble. The single disc contains the complete Violin Concerto at 37 minutes and 5 seconds followed by the String Sextet at 37 minutes and 46 seconds.
