Johannes Brahms composed these three works for solo piano across different periods of his career. The Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24, takes a baroque melody and transforms it through elaborate keyboard writing. The Six Piano Pieces, Op. 118, represent Brahms’ late compositional style with introspective character pieces. The Two Rhapsodies for Piano, Op. 79, showcase the composer’s gift for dramatic, virtuosic writing. Pianist Emanuel Ax recorded these works in 1992 for Sony Classical.

This CD contains all three works performed by Ax on a single disc. The program opens with the technically demanding Variations, moves through the lyrical Six Piano Pieces, and concludes with the Two Rhapsodies.
