Lasse Hallstrom directs this 1999 drama written by John Irving, starring Tobey Maguire as Homer, an orphan who has spent his entire life at the orphanage where he was raised by its director, Dr. Larch, played by Michael Caine. Dr. Larch has trained Homer in medical practice, making him a capable though unlicensed physician. As Homer grows older, he begins to question the life his mentor has mapped out for him and yearns to forge his own path, seeking independence, love, and experiences beyond the orphanage walls. Charlize Theron and Paul Rudd co-star alongside Delroy Lindo in this exploration of duty, desire, and self-discovery.
