Khachaturian’s Spartacus, as performed by the Bolshoi Ballet in 2004, brings Yuri Grigorovich’s choreography to the story of a Thracian slave who rises up against Roman oppression. Principal dancer Irek Mukhamedov commands the title role with technical mastery and dramatic conviction, while Natalya Bessmertnova portrays his love interest with grace and emotional depth. Grigorovich’s staging fills the vast Bolshoi stage with scenes of conflict and tension that showcase the strength and virtuosity of Russia’s male dancers, with Maria Bylova and other company members rounding out the cast.
