George Gently is a British crime drama series that premiered in 2007, based on Alan Hunter’s detective novels. Set in 1964 Northumberland, the story follows Chief Inspector George Gently of Scotland Yard, a traditional lawman confronting both criminal activity and corruption within the police force. When his wife is killed just as he prepares to retire, Gently relocates from London to investigate suspected criminal Joe Webster. He partners with Sergeant John Bacchus, a younger detective whose modern outlook contrasts with Gently’s old-school methods. Together they work to solve the murder of a young motorcyclist, uncovering tensions within a local biker gang that reveal deeper social divisions of the era.

Series 1 arrives on three DVDs from PBS and contains three feature-length episodes written by Alan Hunter, Mick Ford, and Peter Flannery. The IMDb rating stands at 8.1. Picking up a used copy from us means owning this acclaimed mystery drama at a savings.
