An American Haunting is a 2005 horror thriller directed by Courtney Solomon, based on the alleged true story of the Bell Witch haunting. The film stars Donald Sutherland, Sissy Spacek, James D’Arcy, and Rachel Hurd-Wood. Beginning in 1818, an invisible entity terrorizes a wealthy family, growing increasingly aggressive and targeting the father and his daughter. As the disturbances escalate over four years, the spirit develops a voice and communicates with the family, yet refuses to reveal its purpose. The entity eventually pronounces a death sentence on the father, and within a year he dies. The film later reveals the horrific truth behind the spirit’s origin and the dark secrets that spawned it.
