Topper and Topper Returns are a pair of supernatural comedies from the late 1930s and early 1940s. In the first film, Cary Grant and Constance Bennett play George and Marion Kirby, a carefree couple who become ghosts after a car accident. Determined to earn their way to heaven through good deeds, they set their sights on Cosmo Topper, a buttoned-up bank president played by Roland Young, and proceed to shake up his staid existence with pranks and mischief. Billie Burke co-stars as Topper’s disapproving wife. The sequel swaps out Grant and Bennett for new ghostly characters and sends Topper on another wild adventure, this time involving a murder mystery with stylish sets and atmospheric cinematography.
