Through the Shadowlands is a 1986 British drama directed by Norman Stone that examines the profound relationship between author C.S. Lewis and American writer Joy Gresham. Starring Joss Ackland and Claire Bloom alongside Alan MacNaughton, David Waller, and Rhys Hopkins, the film chronicles a transformative period in Lewis’s life marked by intellectual connection and deep emotional attachment. When Gresham’s illness forces Lewis to confront mortality and suffering, his faith is tested in ways that challenge the spiritual certainties he has long expressed through his writing.
