The Segovia Collection, Vol. 5: Five Centuries of the Spanish Guitar

CD Details

Andrés Segovia presents five centuries of Spanish guitar repertoire on this 1989 classical recording. The program spans from Renaissance and Baroque masters like Milán and Narváez, whose pavanas and variations showcase the intricate counterpoint and refined style of early Spanish music, to Romantic-era works by Granados. When Segovia began his career in the early twentieth century, the guitar faced skepticism in Spanish musical circles, overshadowed by the vihuela and lute. Through his interpretations of these classical Spanish Baroque compositions, Segovia demonstrated the instrument’s capacity for depth and sophistication, bringing much of this repertoire to light for modern audiences who might otherwise never have encountered it.

This CD contains Segovia’s performances of works including pavanas by Milán and Narváez, Granados compositions, and pieces by Sanz, offering a survey of the Spanish guitar tradition. Sourced used from our inventory, this disc arrives ready to play.
