Mel Brooks made his directorial debut with this 1967 satirical comedy about two Broadway producers who hatch a scheme to defraud investors by intentionally staging a terrible musical. Zero Mostel plays the low-rent producer Max Bialystock, while Gene Wilder portrays his nervous accountant Leo Bloom. When they recruit gullible backers and mount their deliberately awful show, they expect to profit from the inevitable flop, but their plan backfires when the production unexpectedly becomes a hit.
This two-disc DVD release comes from Embassy Pictures and features the original theatrical version of Brooks’ outrageous comedy. The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and remains a landmark of absurdist humor. Grab this used copy and experience the film that launched one of cinema’s most distinctive comedic voices.
