Morton DaCosta directs this 1962 musical comedy starring Robert Preston as a charming con artist who rolls into a small Iowa town with big plans to swindle money by starting a boys marching band. Shirley Jones plays the town librarian who captures his heart, while young Ron Howard rounds out the cast in this adaptation of Meredith Willson’s Broadway hit. Willson, drawing from his own Midwestern childhood, crafted a score filled with now-classic numbers like “76 Trombones,” “Till There Was You,” and “Trouble” that propel the story of how genuine connection and romance derail the protagonist’s scheme.

Warner Bros. presents this special edition on two DVDs with a runtime of two hours and thirty-one minutes, rated Approved. The film captures the infectious energy of Willson’s entire musical score, bringing the quasi-mythical 1912 setting to vivid life.
