Timothy Dalton makes his debut as James Bond in this 1987 spy thriller directed by John Glen. When a high-ranking KGB general defects with alarming intelligence about a Soviet plot to eliminate British secret agents, 007 is assigned to eliminate the general’s superior. Bond’s investigation leads him to a Czech cellist and a conspiracy involving the defector and an American arms dealer. Dalton brings a grittier, more serious edge to the role, eschewing the comedic tone of recent Bond films in favor of a ruthless, tough, and romantic portrayal that recalls Sean Connery’s approach to the character.
