Michael Winterbottom adapts Jim Thompson’s noir novel for this 2010 crime thriller set in 1950s west Texas. Lou Ford is a deputy sheriff whose courteous manner conceals a deeply disturbed sociopath driven by a twisted past to inflict suffering on those around him. When a prostitute named Joyce arrives in town, Ford’s violent impulses and pathological lying set off a chain of murders, though his incompetence repeatedly threatens to expose him. Caught between Joyce, his schoolteacher girlfriend Amy, and various authority figures, Ford devises an increasingly desperate plan to eliminate his problems, but his mistakes continue to mount.
