David Grubin’s 2008 PBS documentary series traces 350 years of Jewish American history, beginning with 23 Jewish refugees who arrived in New Amsterdam in 1654. The film follows the experiences of Jewish Americans as they navigated the tension between maintaining their religious identity and achieving full acceptance in American society. Through interviews with figures including Carl Reiner, Sid Caesar, Tony Kushner, and others, Grubin explores the personal struggles and cultural questions that defined the Jewish American experience, examining whether democracy in America could truly make room for religious and ethnic minorities.

This single-disc DVD release runs six hours across three two-hour episodes titled “They Came to Stay,” “The Best of Times, the Worst of Times,” and “Home.” Narrated by Liev Schreiber and featuring archival footage, still photographs, and commentary from historians, authors, rabbis, and academics, the series presents a rich portrait of Jewish American life and identity.
