Violist Yizhak Schotten performs a collection of viola works by J.S. Bach on this 2006 recording. Schotten, formerly principal viola of the Houston and Cincinnati Symphonies and a member of the Boston Symphony, is recognized as one of America’s finest string players and now teaches at the University of Michigan. Joining him are harpsichordist Carole Terry and percussionist Frank Epstein, creating an intimate ensemble setting for these baroque compositions that showcase the viola’s expressive range and technical possibilities.

This single-disc CD on the Crystal Records label contains four works: Suite for Viola and Orchestra, Fantasia Cromatica for Unaccompanied Viola, Sonata in C Minor for Viola and Harpsichord, and Variations for Four Drums and Viola, with a total runtime of approximately 66 minutes.
