Set in Nazi Germany during 1938, The Book Thief follows young Liesel Meminger after her mother leaves her with a foster family in a small town. Liesel’s adoptive father Hans Hubermann is a kind man who teaches her to read using a book she stole from her brother’s grave, while her stepmother Rosa, though stern, shows her care. As Liesel bonds with her neighbor Rudy Steiner and becomes an avid reader, her foster family makes the dangerous choice to hide a Jewish refugee named Max Vandenburg in their home. Directed by Brian Percival and based on Markus Zusak’s novel, the film stars Geoffrey Rush as Hans and explores how literature and human kindness offer refuge during one of history’s darkest periods.
