Spring and Chaos is a 1996 Japanese animated biographical drama directed by Shoji Kawamori and Stuart J. Levy. The film chronicles the life of poet and author Kenji Miyazawa from his student years through adulthood, following his journey as an unrecognized creative talent in early 20th-century Japan. Using animal characters in place of humans, mirroring Miyazawa’s own approach in his fairy tales, the film explores his struggles and brief but intense life with a blend of visual styles that reflect the breadth of his artistic inspiration.

This single-disc DVD release runs 55 minutes and carries an IMDb rating of 7.1. The voice cast includes Chikao Ohtsuka, Mariko Kouda, and Shirô Sano. Kawamori’s direction employs expressive editing and computer animation to capture the fantastical and surrealistic world that defined Miyazawa’s work, creating a warm introduction to a major figure in Japanese culture. Grab this used copy and experience an evocative portrait of an artist whose legacy endures.
