Sometimes in April

Movie / Show Details

Sometimes in April is a 2005 HBO drama directed by Raoul Peck that examines the 1994 Rwandan genocide through the interconnected fates of two brothers. Idris Elba stars as a man piecing together the tragedy from a war-crimes tribunal a decade later, where his brother stands trial. The film presents a stark, unflinching account of the hundred days of violence that claimed roughly 800,000 lives, exploring both the horrors on the ground in Rwanda and the international community’s failure to intervene. Debra Winger, Fraser James, Carole Karemera, Oris Erhuero, and Pamela Nomvete round out the cast in this sobering historical drama.

This single-disc DVD release runs two hours and twenty minutes and carries a TV-MA rating from CINEFACTO. Shot on location in Rwanda, Peck’s direct and unflinching style brings documentary-like authenticity to the material, though the approach proves less effective in stateside scenes.
