Barry Levinson directed this 1988 drama starring Tom Cruise as Charlie Babbitt, a self-absorbed car dealer who learns of his estranged father’s death and returns to Cincinnati. There he uncovers a shocking secret: he has an older brother named Raymond, played by Dustin Hoffman, who is a savant living in a mental institution. When Charlie discovers that his father’s substantial inheritance has been left to the facility rather than to him, he manipulates Raymond into leaving the institution under the pretense of reconnecting. What begins as a scheme to reclaim the money transforms into an unexpected cross-country journey that profoundly affects both brothers.
