Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed both of these works for clarinetist Anton Stadler, whose virtuosity inspired the composer to expand the instrument’s musical possibilities. The Clarinet Quintet in A Major, K. 581, arrived in 1789, followed by the Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622, completed in 1791 as one of Mozart’s final compositions. Both pieces showcase the lyrical beauty and emotional depth that Mozart brought to writing for the clarinet, with the concerto offering a more dramatic and elaborate treatment of themes explored in the earlier quintet.

This 1992 Delos CD features Chamber Music Northwest with clarinetist David Shifrin and cellist Fred Sherry performing both works.
