Mister Roberts is a 1955 comedy-drama directed by John Ford and Mervyn LeRoy that follows a Navy officer serving aboard the USS Reluctant during World War II. Stuck on a cargo ship in the Pacific while the real war rages elsewhere, the crew grows restless under their tyrannical captain. Henry Fonda reprises his Tony-winning Broadway role after a seven-year absence from film, while James Cagney delivers a fierce performance as the petty, scrappy commanding officer. Jack Lemmon rounds out the cast as the hapless Ensign Pulver. The film explores how these men struggle not against combat itself but against the indignities and monotony of their assignment, blending moments of sharp humor with underlying sadness to create one of cinema’s most honest examinations of military life.
