Hairspray is a 2007 musical comedy directed by Adam Shankman and written by John Waters, Leslie Dixon, and Mark O’Donnell. Set in 1962 Baltimore, the film follows Tracy Turnblad, a spirited teenager with a passion for dancing who auditions for a local television dance program called “The Corny Collins Show.” After winning a spot on the show, Tracy becomes an overnight celebrity, but she uses her newfound platform to challenge the racial segregation that divides her community. Alongside her best friend Penny and a toe-tapping soundtrack, Tracy navigates teenage romance, scheming authority figures, and her own convictions. The ensemble cast includes Christopher Walken, John Travolta, and Michelle Pfeiffer.
