Hairspray is a 2007 musical comedy directed by Adam Shankman, based on John Waters’ original 1988 film and the Tony Award-winning Broadway adaptation. Set in 1960s Baltimore during the height of the city’s TV dance-show phenomenon, the film follows Tracy Turnblad, an enthusiastic teenager who auditions for the local “Corny Collins Show” and transforms from an outsider into a celebrity trendsetter. With her newfound platform and the support of her fellow performers, Tracy pursues her crush on resident heartthrob Link Larkin while working to break down the racial barriers that plague the show and the community around it. The ensemble cast includes Allison Janney, Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow, Christopher Walken, Elijah Kelley, and James Marsden.
