Godspell

Movie / Show Details

Godspell is a 1973 musical comedy directed by David Greene, adapting the Gospel of Matthew for modern-day New York City. David Haskell, Katie Hanley, Lynne Thigpen, and Victor Garber lead an ensemble of young performers who encounter Jesus and John the Baptist at a city fountain, then journey through Manhattan’s streets learning biblical lessons through vibrant song and dance routines. The film balances an upbeat, celebratory tone with its spiritual subject matter, though it culminates in a somber reenactment of the crucifixion.

This is a single-disc DVD release from Columbia Pictures with a runtime of one hour and forty-three minutes, rated G. The film features Stephen Schwartz’s pop-rock score accompanying the cast through their performances of scripture-based musical numbers.
