Full Metal Jacket [DVD]

Movie / Show Details

Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 war drama follows a U.S. Marine recruit through two distinct phases: the brutal conditioning of Parris Island boot camp and the street combat of the Vietnam War in Hue. The film examines how military training and combat strip away humanity, presenting the conflict as a series of interconnected episodes that reveal the dehumanizing machinery of war. Adam Baldwin, Arliss Howard, Dorian Harewood, Ed O’Ross, John Terry, and Kevyn Major Howard star in Kubrick’s unflinching portrait of soldiers caught between institutional violence and personal survival.

This is a 9-disc DVD edition from Warner Bros. with a runtime of 1 hour 56 minutes and rated R for language and violence. Kubrick’s screenplay, adapted by Gustav Hasford and Michael Herr from Hasford’s novel, creates a cynical Reagan-era perspective on the 1960s’ descent into warfare. Own this powerful examination of military culture and combat’s psychological toll on physical media you can hold onto.
