Equilibrium is a 2002 science fiction action thriller directed by Kurt Wimmer. Set in a dystopian future after World War III, the film follows John Preston (Christian Bale), a high-ranking law enforcement officer in a totalitarian society that has banned emotion itself. To prevent conflict, the regime forces citizens to take mood-suppressing drugs and eliminates all art, music, and literature deemed dangerous to peace. As Preston carries out his duties destroying these cultural relics and arresting “sense offenders,” he begins to question the system he serves and experiences forbidden feelings himself, ultimately leading him to rebel against the oppressive order.
