Dominion - Prequel to the Exorcist

Movie / Show Details

Director Paul Schrader’s 2005 horror-drama explores Father Merrin’s past before the events of The Exorcist. Merrin takes a break from the Church to pursue archaeology at a remote African dig site where a mysteriously buried church has been uncovered, all while wrestling with his lost faith and guilt from the Nazi occupation. When strange occurrences begin happening nearby, a young priest engages Merrin in spiritual debate as the older man’s doubts deepen. The film emphasizes theological conflict and introspection over traditional scares, featuring strong cinematography and a serious examination of Merrin’s crisis of conscience that connects to his character in the original 1973 film.
