Deliverance

John Boorman directed this 1972 thriller based on James Dickey’s novel, following four Atlanta businessmen who embark on a river-rafting expedition down an Appalachian waterway. Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox play men of different temperaments who set out to test themselves against nature, only to discover they have entered a lawless, isolated region far removed from civilization. What begins as an adventure becomes a harrowing struggle for survival as the group encounters dangerous locals and confronts their own capacity for violence and primal instinct. Boorman crafts a complex examination of character and transformation, showing how ordinary men are forever changed by their brush with death and moral compromise.
