Civil War Journal – The Conflict Begins is a 1993 documentary series from A&E that examines the American Civil War’s origins and opening chapters. Hosted by Danny Glover and directed by Donna E. Lusitana and Yann Debonne, this collection explores the events and figures that led to armed conflict, including abolitionist John Brown’s raid on a federal armory, the political tensions that erupted at Fort Sumter in South Carolina, the initial optimism soldiers felt before experiencing the brutal reality of the First Bull Run, and the courage of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, an African American unit from New England that faced both enemy fire and racism.

This two-disc DVD set contains three hours and twenty minutes of programming and carries an NR rating. The series uses interviews with historians, archival photographs, and battle reenactments to present its historical accounts. Own a piece of Civil War history on physical media at a used price.
