Tony Kushner’s landmark play became an HBO miniseries in 2003, directed by Mike Nichols. Set during the AIDS crisis of 1980s America, the story follows interconnected characters whose lives collide across political, personal, and spiritual dimensions. Al Pacino portrays Roy Cohn, a ruthless right-wing lawyer, while Ben Shenkman plays Louis Ironson, whose relationship with Prior Walter fractures under the weight of illness and fear. As Prior experiences mysterious religious visions, other characters including a closeted Mormon politician, his troubled wife, and a fierce drag queen nurse navigate their own struggles with identity, mortality, and faith. The miniseries blends political drama, fantasy, and romance into a sweeping portrait of an era.
