American Gangster is a 2007 crime drama directed by Ridley Scott and based on the true story of Frank Lucas, a Harlem drug kingpin who built a heroin empire during the Vietnam War era. Denzel Washington stars as Lucas, a ruthless operator who runs his criminal organization with brutal efficiency and a personal code of honor. When an outcast Newark detective named Richie Roberts, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, begins investigating Lucas’s multi-million dollar operation, the two men become locked in an intense battle of wills that defines them both.
