Amazing Grace is a 2006 biographical drama directed by Michael Apted that chronicles William Wilberforce’s determined campaign to abolish the British slave trade during the late eighteenth century. Facing considerable political resistance and personal hardship, Wilberforce remains committed to his moral mission, bolstered by allies including his minister and a former slave ship captain who became the author of the hymn that shares the film’s title. Albert Finney, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Ioan Gruffudd, Jeremy Swift, and Michael Gambon anchor the ensemble cast in this historical drama written by Steven Knight.
