George Cukor directed this 1954 musical drama marking Judy Garland’s return to film after a four-year absence. Garland plays Esther Blodgett, a talented young singer on the rise who catches the attention of Norman Maine, a once-prominent actor played by James Mason, now struggling with alcoholism and fading relevance. Their relationship becomes a transformative force for both, though only one will ultimately navigate the harsh realities of Hollywood. The film features songs by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin and represents a significant achievement for Cukor, his first musical and first color film.

This single-disc DVD release runs two hours and thirty-four minutes and carries a US Approved rating from Warner Bros. The film was originally shortened after its premiere but underwent restoration in 1983 when film historian Ronald Haver located nearly all the excised sequences, resulting in a version closer to Cukor’s original vision. This used copy lets you own a Hollywood classic about ambition and sacrifice at a fraction of retail.
