David Lean directed this 1984 British-Indian drama adapted from E.M. Forster’s novel, starring Judy Davis, Victor Banerjee, Alec Guinness, Peggy Ashcroft, James Fox, and Nigel Havers. Set during India’s independence movement under British rule, the film follows a young English woman who arrives to marry a colonial magistrate and forms a friendship with an Indian doctor. When accusations of assault emerge, the relationship becomes caught in a web of cultural misunderstanding and tension that threatens to tear apart the fragile social order of the Raj era.
