Zebra Crossing

CD Details

Zebra Crossing is a 1994 album by the Soweto String Quartet, a South African ensemble that blends folk, world, and pop influences. The group combines cello, viola, and violins with a South African rhythm section, winds, and brass to create a sound that moves between the vibrant township fiddle traditions of Soweto and the accessible pop sensibility of Paul Simon’s Graceland era. Tracks include “Mbayi Mbayi,” “Zulu Lullaby,” “Kwela,” a medley from the Paul Simon Graceland collection, “Bossa Baroque,” and several other pieces that showcase the quartet’s approach to contemporary world music.

This is a CD release of the album featuring the Soweto String Quartet’s light, polished production style. The ensemble delivers both full-band arrangements with rhythm section backing and lighter romantic pieces for strings alone, offering listeners a particular take on South African popular music forms.
