John Ford directed this 1939 biographical drama following Abraham Lincoln’s early years as a frontier lawyer in Illinois. The film traces young Abe’s emergence from storekeeper and amateur politician into a man of principle and legal acumen, particularly through his defense of two brothers accused of murder. Henry Fonda stars alongside Alice Brady, Arleen Whelan, Donald Meek, and Eddie Quillan in a portrait that captures Lincoln’s personal struggles, including his romance with Mary Todd, while suggesting the historic figure he would become.

This is a two-disc DVD release from The Criterion Collection, presenting Ford’s 1939 masterpiece in a restored transfer. The film runs 100 minutes and carries a US Approved rating. Lamar Trotti and Rosemary Benét wrote the screenplay, which unfolds with the quiet inevitability of fable, revealing character through small moments rather than grand gestures.
