Words That Remain is a 1998 folk album by Iris DeMent, John Anthony, and John Doyle, released on the Shanachie label. This recording blends Celtic and American folk traditions, opening with a spirited Irish interpretation of Woody Guthrie’s “Pastures Of Plenty” and moving through traditional material including “The Grey Selchie” and “La Bruxa.” The album features guest contributions from banjoist Bela Fleck and bassist Chico Huff, while the core ensemble showcases John Doyle’s rhythmic guitar work alongside a range of traditional instruments including banjo, flutes, mandolin, and fiddle. The collection balances Irish dance sets with songs carrying social messages, including “Song Of Choice,” which features Iris DeMent on vocals.
