West Side Story is a 1961 musical romance directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, with a screenplay by Ernest Lehman based on Arthur Laurents and Robbins’ stage work. Set in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the film transposes Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to a world of gang conflict, where the Jets and Sharks battle for control of their neighborhood. When Tony, a member of the Jets played by Richard Beymer, meets Maria, the sister of the Sharks’ leader portrayed by Natalie Wood, their forbidden romance ignites tensions that spiral toward tragedy.
