West Side Story is a 1961 musical drama directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, with a screenplay by Arthur Laurents and Ernest Lehman based on Jerome Robbins’ original stage work. Set in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the film follows two young members of rival gangs who fall in love despite the violent tensions between their communities. The ensemble cast includes George Chakiris, Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, and Russ Tamblyn, while Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim provide the iconic score that drives this reimagining of Romeo and Juliet in an urban setting.
