William Walton’s Symphony No. 1 and Varii Capricci are presented here in a 1991 recording led by conductor Bryden Thomson with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The symphony, composed between the World Wars, builds tension throughout its opening movement in one continuous arc, with resolution arriving near the end of the finale as timpani and percussion reinforce the work’s ultimately optimistic character. Varii Capricci, originally conceived as guitar compositions, emerges here in an orchestral arrangement that reveals unexpected dimensions of the material.
This single CD on the Chandos label contains both works with a total runtime of approximately 60 minutes. Thomson’s interpretations are distinguished, supported by excellent sound quality and orchestral playing. Acquire this used copy and enjoy Walton’s neo-Romantic vision at a fraction of retail cost.
