Cheryl Dunye directs and stars in this 1996 independent comedy-drama set in Philadelphia, following a young Black lesbian filmmaker as she researches the life of Fae Richards, a 1930s actress known for playing mammy roles in Hollywood films. While investigating Richards’ mysterious past, Cheryl navigates her own romantic relationship with Diana (Guinevere Turner) and contends with sharp commentary from her best friend Tamara (Valerie Walker), all while grappling with questions about identity, representation, and her own future.
