The Runaways

Movie / Show Details

The Runaways is a 2010 biographical drama directed by Floria Sigismondi that chronicles the rise of an all-female rock band in 1970s California. Based on Cherie Currie’s memoir, the film follows two teenage musicians, Cherie and Joan Jett, as they are brought together by impresario Kim Fowley to form a groundbreaking group. Unlike manufactured bands of the era, The Runaways wrote and performed their own music, paving the way for future all-girl rock outfits. As the band tours from California to Japan and gains devoted fans, internal tensions mount, with Cherie growing weary of Fowley’s harsh management while her bandmates struggle with the spotlight placed on her as the group’s frontwoman.
