Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek star in this 1984 drama about Tom and Mae Garvey, a Tennessee farming couple determined to protect their land from both devastating floods and corporate foreclosure. When Mae’s former lover, John Wade (Scott Glenn), becomes involved in a plan to acquire their property for a local power authority, old tensions resurface and lead to a climactic confrontation along the flooded riverbanks. Director Mark Rydell crafts a moving story about love, faith, and the struggle to preserve an independent way of life against the forces of nature and economic hardship.
